DAY 1
December 18th 11.00 – 14.00
CREATIVE 1- Rope manipulation + Deconstructing what you know
During this 3-hour workshop, I will share a series of methodologies I have been developing in the last one year during my Master study at DOCH. Focus of this seminar is to learn to think through movement AND while moving on our aerial apparatus. To be aware of what we do, to make conscious choices and get a deeper understanding of it. To be aware of oneself, it means to open the doors to all sort of creativity, and it allows the body to discover and explore whole new possibilities and pathways.
DAY 1
December 11th 14.30 – 16.30 TECHNIQUE
Technique and tricks are the words of our circus language, words necessary to be able to create. Without this vocabulary, it would be impossible to make sentences, on a creative level too.
This session comprises a variety of tricks, some more conventional and some other ones generated by myself throughout the years. We will break them down, try them on the floor and up in the air, through a progressive process that allows participants to get a better understanding of the movement and the appropriate technique to succeed. Climbs, C-shape and more.
Personal technical advice and requests can be taken on board too if some participants have specific questions or ideas they would like to try out.
DAY 2
December 12th 10.00 – 13.00
CREATIVE 2 – Writing the body
We live in a society where we learn to communicate verbally and, simply, we do not understand the language of our own body. We learn to train and perform tricks without establishing a connection with the bodies involved in the process (in this case the rope and the silks).
This seminar focuses on movement research through the lens of writing as a method to verbalize the body. Furthermore, we will play with the concept of alteration and adaptation with the objective to inform our practice. To alter our apparatus and space, it means to get to know it better from different angles and innovative perspectives.
BIO:
Originally from Sicily, grew up all over.
Movement research, knots and transitions are the main core of my Master research for now. I am currently developing workshops designed to support participants to develop their personal style, words and language.
My work is interdisciplinary. I use writing, movement, photography, videography and crochet as part of my practice.
I believe in structured improvisation, in verbal and physical communication as the most natural and therefore most obvious approach to create.
I am interested in the development of alternative methods to approach the rope and movement in general in order to promote the individuality of the maker. I am interested in freedom of movement in opposition to a virtuosity designated by pre-existing ideals of aesthetic dictated by a system that forces people to fit in, comform and repeat without questioning. I would like to be an advocate for all those aerialists who experience the contradiction of an art that is sold as the embodiment of freedom while all it does is to impose physical, creative, artistic and technical boundaries to be followed and mastered in order to fit in and survive the market and which actually does not allow the single artists to voice their own virtuosity, movement and personalities.
